Tagset | Exchange Collection on AO3
Dublin Murder Exchange Basic Rules
What are nominations?
In order for the computer to match up writers with assignments (which saves mods a lot of trouble), there must be an approved list of pairings. For example, in our tagset, the approved tag for Rob/Cassie is "Cassie Maddox/Rob Ryan (DMS - French)". Now if you sign up requesting that tag, and somebody else signs up offering that tag, the computer will pair you two together.
If we didn't have a tagset, then you might request "Rob/Cassie" and somebody else might offer "Cassie/Rob". The computer could not match you because those two are not the exact. (The computer is not a shipper and doesn't know they're the same, lol). Or, even worse, you might request "Rob/Cassie" thinking of the book series, and somebody else might offer "Rob/Cassie" thinking of the TV series!
So anyways, if you want to request fic with a certain pairing or offer fic with a certain pairing, make sure it is in the tagset.
If it is already in the tagset, you do not need to nominate it.
If you want a romantic or sexual relationship, format it like this: "Scorcher Kennedy/Frank Mackey/Stephen Moran (DMS - French)"
If you want a platonic relationship, format it like this: "Antoinette Conway & Stephen Moran (DMS - French)"
If you want a story focusing on a character (instead of a relationship), format it like this: "Cassie Maddox & None (DMS - French)"
The name order in a pairing is alphabetical by last name and does not imply anything about topping, etc.
There are three fandoms you can nominate relationships for: Dublin Murder Squad Series - Tana French, Dublin Murders (TV), and Crossover Fandom.
The tagset is here and nominations to it will be open from August 7, 2020 to August 14, 2020.
How do I sign up?
When signups open (from August 15, 2020 to August 23, 2020) you should be able to sign up here on AO3.
You must request at least three different relationships or characters. You must offer at least three different relationships or characters. At most, you can request 10 and offer 10.
Please be sure to include a list of Do Not Wants (DNWs) in the Details box! Unless you genuinely are fine with receiving any kind of fic, in which case please say "No DNWs". DNWs should be specific. For instance, do not ask for "nothing icky" because it's very hard to know what that means. DNWs should also not force the author to only write one thing. For instance, do not DNW "fic where my chosen character isn't pregnant" because it's unfair to try and make your writer do one very narrow type of fic (in the example, pregnancy fic).
Likes, prompts, ship thoughts, general screaming, etc. is optional and can go into the Details box or into a letter which you can link in the "Optional Dear Author Letter URL" box.
Please keep in mind that optional details ARE OPTIONAL—this means that a writer only needs to include at least one of your requested relationships and avoid your DNWs. Writers are not obliged to write out a specific prompt or plot for you.
What if nobody requests what I offer?
This might happen if, say, you offer "Holly Mackey & Rob Ryan (Dublin Murders TV)", "Melissa/Stephen Moran (DMS - French)" and "Ross Geller (Friends TV) & Rob Ryan (DMS - French)" and nobody requests any of those things. In that case, when signups close, mods will email you to see if there are any offers you can add. If you cannot write for any requested tags, or if you do not respond to the mod email within 24 hours, your signup will be deleted. :( Sorry, but we gotta make sure everybody writes at least one thing and receives at least one thing for it to be a fair exchange.
What if nobody offers what I request?
This might happen if, say, you request "Richie Curran & Sophie (DMS - French)" and "Carmel Mackey & None (DMS - French)" and "Antoinette Conway (DMS - French)/Furiosa (Mad Max Fury Road)" and nobody offers any of those things. That's okay! You will become a pinch hit, which means your requests are publicly available to be claimed. And mods will make sure that somebody picks up your assignment and writes you a fic before works are revealed. Do not worry about it if you become a pinch hit, being a pinch hit happens to people all the time and it is a normal part of exchanges.
What do I need to write and where do I publish it?
When assignments go out, you should receive an email with your assignment. You should also be able to see your assignments in the tab "My Assignments" under the dropdown that appears in AO3 when you're logged in and it says "Hi, [Your Username Here!]"
You need to write one story for your assignment that is at least 500 words long. It can't hit any of their Do Not Wants (DNWs). For example, if they DNW sexual assault and you have a sexual assault investigation in your fic? That's against the rules. Your fic must include at least one of the relationships that your assignment asked for. And finally, your fic must be complete. It can end on a cliffhanger, it can be in a very experimental writing style, whatever you like, just please don't start writing a story, stop halfway through and just post it because you ran out of time. Email mods for help instead.
You must publish your fic on AO3 and gift it to your assigned recipient. You can publish your fic by clicking "Fulfill" on your assignments page, or by going to the collection here and clicking "Post to the Collection". Make sure that you gift the fic to the right user in the "Gift this work to" box.
There is a countdown to the deadline here.
Again, I can't emphasize this enough, if this is your first exchange and you're intimidated and/or confused, please feel free to comment on this post or email mods at ashling.and.hurricanes@gmail.com. We want you to sign up! We want to help!
Can I write for somebody even if they aren't my assignment?
Yes! Extra gifts are called treats. Treats can be any length and they can be written by anybody. Even if you didn't sign up, you can write treats. The only rule regarding treats is that you must keep the recipient's DNWs in mind.
What if I can't make the deadline?
Don't panic! This happens to the best of us. You can do one of two things.
First, you can default (by clicking on the default button on your assignments page) which takes away the assignment and lets the mods know you can't continue. This is fine. Your assignment will become a pinch hit, which means it will be publicly up for grabs, and somebody else will take it and write it to make sure your recipient gets a gift. If you default, we cannot guarantee you will get a gift.
Second, you can keep the assignment, email mods, and ask for an extension. Please include a description of how much you have already written and an estimate of how much extra time you think you will need. Mods will email back and let you know.
How do I claim a pinch hit?
Pinch hits will be posted to this dreamwidth. You can claim any pinch hit you like by commenting on the pinch hit post (comments will be screened so you remain anonymous) or you can email mods telling them which pinch hit you want.
When do I get my gift?
All gifts in the collection will be kept a secret until September 18, 2020, when they will become public. You should get an email from AO3 letting you know that your gift has been revealed.
If anyone has a) written their assignment and b) not received a gift, then we cannot open the collection on September 18, and the collection opening will be delayed until everybody who wrote their assignment also gets a gift. This is for the sake of fairness. Mods do not anticipate this happening because we have some pretty good pinch hitters on deck ;)
When the works are revealed, the authors will initially be anonymous. The anonymity is a fun feature meant to help relatively new authors get some readership. Also, you can guess who wrote what, and if you're right, you get to gloat about it ;)
Anonymity will end on September 25, 2020, when authors will be revealed.
Note: Mods reserve the right to contact participants and act on any of the following issues as they see fit.
—If you include a DNW in your signup that is very vague (like "DNW icky stuff") or that forces your writer to only write one thing (like "DNW characters not being pregnant").
—If you write a fic with a DNW that your recipient included in their signup box.
—If you upload a fic that's only half-finished. (Note: it's okay to have a cliffhanger ending, though!)
—Asshole behavior. I know it when I see it (see: Jacobellis v Ohio).
If we see this, we will reach out. Hopefully it's just a misunderstanding, but again, mods reserve the right to use their personal judgment in order to keep this exchange a positive experience for all participants.
Dublin Murder Exchange Basic Rules
- You must write at least one gift for the person you're assigned to. This is called your assignment.
- You will receive at least one gift from somebody else.
- Every assignment should be at least 500 words long.
- Every assignment should avoid the recipient's Do Not Wants. DNWs are a list of things that they can't read about which will be included in their signup. Common DNWs include types of violence, types of sex, certain pairings, certain AUs.
- In order to participate, you need to have an archiveofourown.org account. If you do not have one and you want one, comment on this post or email ashling.and.hurricanes@gmail.com (mod has three invites).
